Chat that families actually trust

Kindred gives kids their own messaging space with parental oversight, content filtering, and encryption so strong even we can't read it.

Features

Everything families need. Nothing they don't.

Kindred is purpose-built for family communication — no ads, no algorithms, no strangers.

End-to-end encryption

Every message is encrypted using the Signal protocol. Not even Kindred can read your family's conversations.

Parental oversight

Parents approve contacts, review flagged messages, and set per-child content filters — without reading every message.

Family graph

Kids can only chat with family members and parent-approved friends. No strangers, ever.

Content filtering

Block inappropriate words, require message approval, or let conversations flow — per-child, your choice.

Real-time messaging

Typing indicators, read receipts, reactions, and instant delivery via WebSockets. Fast and familiar.

Multi-device

Each device gets its own encryption keys. Log in on a new phone, tablet, or hand-me-down — sessions stay isolated.

How it works

Set up in under 5 minutes

Three steps. No app store passwords required for kids.

1

Parent creates the family

Sign up, add your children, and connect with other parents you trust. Kids get a simple login code — no email needed.

2

Approve your kids' contacts

When another family wants to connect, both parents must approve. Kids see only the people you've okayed.

Kids chat safely

Messages flow encrypted. Content filters catch anything iffy. Parents stay informed without hovering.

Safety first

Privacy that protects, not hides

Most chat apps encrypt to keep corporations out. Kindred encrypts to keep everyone out — while giving parents the tools to keep children safe.

  • Zero-knowledge architecture Messages are encrypted on-device. Our servers store ciphertext only.
  • No data mining No ads, no tracking pixels, no selling data. We make money from subscriptions.
  • Closed contact graph Children cannot be discovered or contacted by anyone outside their family's approved network.
  • On-device key generation Encryption keys never leave your phone. Log out and they're wiped.

FAQ

Common questions

What age is Kindred designed for?

Kindred is built for kids of all ages. We believe parents know best when their children are ready to start chatting — so you decide when to hand them the keys. Your children, your choice, our pleasure.

Can parents read all messages?

Not by default. Kindred uses end-to-end encryption, so parents can't read message content on the server. However, content filtering can flag or require approval for messages before they're sent — giving parents oversight without surveillance.

How is this different from iMessage or WhatsApp?

Those apps are designed for adults. Kindred is built around the family graph — kids can only contact parent-approved people, and parents have fine-grained content controls. Plus, there are no ads, no stories, no algorithmic feeds.

What happens if my kid loses their phone?

Sign out remotely and encryption keys are wiped from the device. Create a new login code and your child can set up on a new device with fresh keys. Old sessions can't be compromised.

Is Kindred free?

Kindred is free during the beta period. We plan to offer a generous free tier with optional paid plans for larger families and advanced features.

What platforms are supported?

Kindred is available for iOS and Android. A web version for parents is planned.
